Abortion rights

  • Moseley Exchange 149–153 Alcester Road, Moseley Birmingham United Kingdom (map)

At our March meeting we’ll be discussing abortion rights. Do come and join us to consider this important topic.

We talk about ‘abortion rights’ and ‘freedom of choice’, but women in Britain still have no absolute right to an abortion. Over 50 years after the legislation that made abortion legal, women are still dependent on the judgement of doctors, who act as gatekeepers. The access that women do have to abortion seems always to be under threat – there are frequent attempts by ‘pro-life’ campaigners to make it harder for women to gain access to abortions. This includes trying to get the 24 week limit reduced and intimidating behaviour outside abortion clinics. And even though abortion up to 24 weeks is legal, women can still be imprisoned for procuring an abortion after the time limit.

We’ll be discussing what all this means for women’s abortion rights – what the present situation is, and how we can safeguard women’s right to abortion in the future.
