Who are Birmingham Humanists?
We are the local voice of Humanism. Our history has been documented in Wikipedia: click here.
The Group was founded in the 1960s, and is part of a network of autonomous Humanist Groups throughout Britain (sic) that are affiliated to the British Humanist Association (BHA). The BHA is in turn an influential member of the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU). So by joining Birmingham Humanists you become part of a worldwide movement. But we are autonomous and not a branch of BHA, so we would strongly urge you to join BHA as well as BH, to increase the strength of numbers.
We meet approximately monthly, though sometimes more often. We often meet in a member’s home, but our central meeting place is, ironically, a religious meeting place – for Quakers: The Friends Meeting House, George Road, Edgbaston, B15.
We meet together to discuss various subjects of interest to members, including Humanism itself, and often have a guest speaker. We visit the theatre and go on rambles. We try to be involved in local Arts Festivals, both for the publicity and to meet people who may never find out about us.
Many of our members are also involved in local charities to help people less fortunate than ourselves.
