Humanism, religious education and the law

  • Moseley Exchange 149–153 Alcester Road, Moseley Birmingham United Kingdom (map)

Drawing on the High Court judgments in Fox v Secretary of State for Education (2015) and, more recently, Bowen v Kent County Council (2023), Dr Ruth Wareham will discuss the ramifications of human rights law for the inclusion of humanists and humanism in the constitution of Standing Advisory Councils on Religious Education (SACREs) and Agreed Syllabus Conferences (ASCs), agreed syllabuses, and the teaching of RE more generally.

Dr Ruth Wareham is a Lecturer in Philosophy of Education at the University of Birmingham and Education Policy Researcher at Humanists UK. Ruth’s primary research interests sit at the intersection between religion, belief and education and she previously worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow on the Faith Schooling: Principles and Policy project at the University of Warwick. She was recently appointed as the humanist representative on Birmingham SACRE.
